Lyrics
This one's for every bloke Every sheila Who ever had to fight Just for a fair go
Some were born with open doors Some with nothing but the dust Some had hands to lift them up Some learned who to trust That never was the question No one claimed the race was square We just asked for one thing Give us all a fair go there
A fair go
Now every step needs permission Every dream must fit the plan Too many good intentions Forget the common man
Give me a fair go Don't fence the open plain Don't smother hope with promises That old fair go still remains Give me a fair go Don't tell me who to be Open up the gate again And let the people free Hey!
The miner finds the iron The farmer waits on rain The builder signs his house away To have a go again The shopkeeper turns the sign around Before the morning light Not looking for a handout Just the freedom to stand and fight
Just let them try
Another rule Another form Another reason why The ladder gets a little higher Every time we try
Give me a fair go Don't fence the open plain Don't smother hope with promises That old fair go still remains Give me a fair go Don't tell me who to be Open up the gate again And let the people free
We help the ones who've fallen That's what Australians do But helping isn't holding Someone back from breaking through Don't pull down every tall gum Just to level every hill The heart that built this country Is beating stronger still
They changed the words we grew up with The meaning slipped away A fair go became a fair share Somewhere along the way Now success must wear an apology Dreams are measured out While the quiet working people Wonder what it's all about
Come On!
Give me a fair go Let the southern cross remind We're at our best when freedom lives Inside the human mind Give me a fair go Let every voice proclaim Open wide the gate again And let hope fan the flame
Give me a fair go We'll carry it along That old fair go still remains As long as we keep strong
Give me a fair go Give me a fair go
That's all we're asking A fair go
